Nothing under the sun is not made. In this issue, we investigate nature in the broadest sense. Every philosophy of technology needs a philosophy of nature—or better, several. In any tool, the nature of the user meets the nature she might use that tool to shape. Then again, nature in the colloquial sense—meaning what came before us and will outlive us—could hardly seem more distant in an era of rapid, catastrophic change that seems to shrink the past to the vanishing point and make it harder to imagine a habitable future. We change our nature as we change our tools, and our tools change us.
